Introduction and Orientation
Welcome and thank-you for visiting our web site. If you are a Unitarian Universalist and have recently moved to the area, we hope you will be among us soon. If you are new to Unitarian Universalism and are interested in learning more, we hope that this web site will be helpful. Please feel free to contact the minister by phone, email, or visit to the church during office hours to learn more. Of course, the best way to learn about Unitarian Universalism is to visit our church for a Sunday Service, and we hope you will soon.
The Unitarian Universalist Church of Midland was founded in 1954 and has served ever since as an oasis of the liberal spirit in religion for West Texas. This congregation is a place where people on a variety of spiritual paths come together to grow in religious depth and learn about and embody their faithfulness in the world. The heart of the various covenants that have bound Unitarian and Universalist congregations together for over 400 years rests on these great ideals: freedom, reason, and tolerance.
Although we do not subscribe to a common creed, Unitarian Universalists do commonly affirm the worth and dignity of all persons, the call to live a deeper, less superficial life, the practice of working for social justice, and the reasonable discourse of people who view the world through different philosophical and theological lenses. In the creative interchange among our various experiences and opinions, we believe we find meaningful personal growth and authentic spirituality.
All people of good will and in sympathy with the liberal spirit in religion are welcome to participate in the life of this congregation, both in worship and in our programs.
You can join the church by signing your name in the membership book in the presence of the minister or a member of the Board. Visitors new to Unitarian Universalism are encouraged to attend several times and become familiar with the church before joining. "New to UU" classes are offered by the minister during the year for those interested. Membership in this religious community requires no subscription to a creed or particular theological outlook, but does signify your sympathy with our covenant and your willingness to give of your energy, time, and resources to help this church fulfill its mission. Of course if you feel membership is not right for you at this time, you will be welcomed to continue attending as a friend.
